Vienna, great interest in the Port of Trieste

VIENNA – Approximately 250 operators and experts attended the presentation of the Port of Trieste held on January 26th at the Italian embassy in Vienna. The event focused on the main strengths of the Port, paying special attention to the new intermodal services and to the high development potential in the European context, being the only seaport in Italy with main focus in international rail connections.

Debora Serracchiani, president of the Region Friuli Venezia Giulia, presented the works, mentioning that the Italian Government did already allocate 60 million euros to the Port  just for the railway. The president also highlighted that the seaport is a real free zone that can provide to the customers both fiscal advantages and services connected to the first treatment of goods. Then the president of the Port Authority of the Eastern Adriatic Sea, Zeno D’Agostino, went into details speaking about the characteristics and the strategic role that the seaport of Friuli Venezia Giulia can offer to the countries of Central Europe, especially to Austria. “Both containers and trains are the strength of the Port of Trieste” states D’Agostino, emphasizing the MSC’s commitment for the development of the port and the record of trains moved in 2016. The future perspective, he added, is to increase the capacity of the rail infrastructure up to 13.200 trains/year and to work towards activities related to the processing industry.
The meeting was moderated by Bernd Winter, editor of the magazine Verkehr and was participated by the ambassador of Italy in Austria Giorgio Marrapodi, the secretery of the  German-Italian Chamber of Commerce Alessandro Marino, Erik Regter (Rail cargo group), Frederik Wexel (MSC Austria) and Oliver Wagner (Zentralverband Spedition & Logistik, Vienna).
