TMT welcomes the new record capacity container ship
TRIESTE - A new record for the largest container ship capacity ever to enter the Adriatic Sea was marked today when Maersk Hamburg arrived at Molo VII to be operated at Trieste Marine Terminal.
The container capacity of Maersk Hamburg is 15,226 Teu and, until now, the record was held by MSC Paloma, with its 14,000 Teu, welcomed at TMT in December 2016. The Maersk shipping line vessel was built in 2018 by Korean Hyundai Heavy Industries. It measures 353 meters in length and 54 meters in width with the containers aligned in 21 rows.
The ship can dock at the Port of Trieste thanks to its natural draft of 18 meters, whereas the recent upgrades of the terminal cranes allow efficient TMT operations on par with the most modern international ports. The utilization of high capacity container ships on the 2M oceanic service is an evident sign of the traffic growth trend at Trieste Marine Terminal. Molo VII is the only pier in the Adriatic Sea with the capacity to moor two oceanic mega-ships simultaneously, which will be further improved by planned private investments.
