Rail traffic growth: +26.5% for TMT in 2016

TRIESTE – A record-breaking year for the railroad volumes at Trieste Marine Terminal with a 26.5% growth compared to 2015.

The performance of the container terminal is in line with the growing trend of the whole Port of Trieste that, in 2016, has become the first Port of Italy for the number of trains operated. The positive trend registered by TMT is mainly driven by the development of the connections with Central and Eastern Europe. Data shows a 60% increase in the volumes directed towards Austria, Slovakia, Czech Republic, Germany and Hungary. Currently TMT is offering to its customers four regular departures/week to Budapest and Munich and the trend so far suggests a further increase of both services in 2017. Turning to Austria, data shows a +8% in 2016 thanks also to the opening of two weekly round trip trains to Salzburg in June, that have been determining for the positive outcome. Of high importance as well the two weekly round trip departures to Ostrava (Czech Republic), together with the three trains to Dunajska Streda (Slovakia), both part of the project developed by MSC (Mediterranean Shipping Company) in collaboration with Metrans, the leading railroad operator for Eastern European destinations.
