Trieste–Padova, new rail connection serving North-eastern Italy

TRIESTE - The rail connection linking the Port of Trieste to Padova, which is open to the operators of maritime containers sector, was launched on 11th May, just after the first openings at the end the lockdown period in Italy.

This intermodal service stems from the operational collaboration between Alpe Adria and Mercitalia Rail and responds to the needs of the industrial market of the North-East of Italy. Thanks to the synergies activated with the dry port of Padova, since last June the train has been running five times a week, against the initial three weekly circulations in roundtrip.
The positive trend of the service, for which an increase in circulations is foreseen, benefits from the privileged conditions of the Port of Trieste during the complex period linked to Covid-19 emergency: in the period, Trieste Marine Terminal – the container terminal of the Port of Trieste – did not suffer from blank voyages especially of 2M alliance (MSC and Maersk); on the contrary, it is registering a constant increase also in the volumes performed by the Ocean Alliance (COSCO Shipping, Evergreen, CMA-CGM and OOCL).
The upheaving interest of the shipping lines for the connection Trieste to Padova has made possible a positive co-operation between Alpe Adria and its two main customers on the service, Medlog and T.O. Delta, which in two months concurred to the elimination of 1,600 trucks from the road and to a reduction in CO2 emissions by 240 tons.
