Port of Trieste, excellent semester for containers and trains

TRIESTE – More and more trains at the Port of Trieste: in the first six months of the year both containers and the percentage of freight moved by rail are growing. Slight overall decrease in total traffic, with a strong minus sign for Ro-Ro.

The Port network authority of the eastern Adriatic Sea released the statistics for the first half of 2019. With a total of 391,068 moving Teus, the container sector grew by 13.33%, while the number of trains (5.171) recorded a +7.37%, again compared to the same period of 2018. In particular, container traffic moved by rail has risen to 55%, exceeding the 50% target for the EU by 2050.
The slight decrease in total volumes of freight handled in the first six months of the year (-1.44% with 30.721.066 tons) was substantially caused by a slight reduction in liquid bulk, essentially crude oil, with 21,102,476 tons and a -1.87% and of general goods (-2.98%). The decrease for the Ro-Ro sector was more evident, with -28% and 111.987 units transited.
